Conservative Party Chairman Amanda Milling pays tribute to Prince Philip

Prince Philip, 2009

3 min read

This week our Queen lost her husband, a family lost their father, grandfather and great-grandfather and our country lost a loyal and dedicated public servant.

This sad news has rocked our nation and I offer my deepest condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family.

As flags fly at half mast, gun salutes are fired and our country comes together to pay our respects to His Royal Highness, the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, we must remember a lifetime of service to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

Prince Philip lived a truly extraordinary life. One of dedication to our Queen and lifelong service to our county.

During a prominent career in the Royal Navy in the Second World War, his actions saved the lives of others and contributed to the war effort that afforded us the freedoms we have today.

Throughout their 74 years of marriage he loyally and steadfastly stood by our Queen.

Through marriage to her Majesty the Queen he chose to dedicate his life to our great country.

Over decades of service as the Duke of Edinburgh, he acted as a remarkable public servant with unwavering dedication to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

He travelled the country and the world supporting the Armed Forces, reaching out to communities, and devoting himself to raising awareness of issues close to his heart.

As the patron of many charities, Prince Philip promoted the needs of others and his tireless commitment to The Duke of Edinburgh Award has undoubtedly transformed the lives of countless young people across the United Kingdom.

Prince Philip has been a stalwart of British life for generations.

He was a constant by the Queen’s side or the customary two steps behind. Part of the fabric of our country.

Whilst he has been one of the biggest contributors to public life, first and foremost he was a loving husband and dedicated family man.

Throughout their 74 years of marriage he loyally and steadfastly stood by our Queen.

For decades he was her rock and most loyal supporter, in the Queen’s own words her “strength and stay,” during the highs and lows that the Royal Family and our country have weathered.

Prince Philip has shown the world exactly how a husband can support a powerful woman.

To his family he has been a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. And of course he has brought a unique sense of humour to many key moments.

The death of Prince Philip has been deeply felt by all of us.  The outpouring of grief from across the globe shows how much Prince Philip meant to so many and it has been heartwarming to see people’s memories of meeting His Royal Highness.

I am sure as the Royal Family mourns they will take comfort in the many people who have been touched by the work and service of Prince Philip. He will be sorely missed, but remembered with great affection.

As our country comes together to mourn the death of the world’s most famous husband, we will remember Prince Philip’s selfless dedication to Queen and country.

Despite being in the Queen’s shadow he has made a lasting impact on the United Kingdom. His work and devotion will shine brightly for generations to come.

While a great hole has been left we are left with a great legacy and example of the impact one person’s dedication and service to our country can do.

As we mourn the loss of His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh we remember a life of duty and loyal service. So let’s use his life as inspiration for how we can better serve our country and communities.
