Consultation of public sector workers will have little or no influence on the decisions the government takes on cuts, in the view of the vast majority of voters.
Those are the results of a new PoliticsHome poll, which found that three quarters of people were sceptical about the effects that the consultation process recently announced by the government (in which 6 million public sector workers will be asked for suggestions on how to cut departmental spending) will have on its decision making process.
Forty three per cent of people think that the consultation will have ‘virtually no influence’ on the government’s decisions, and a further thirty two per cent believe it will have only a small amount of influence.
Conservative supporters had the most optimistic assessment of the likely influence of the consultation, with over a third (thirty seven per cent) reckoning it would have significant influence.
Labour supporters were hugely sceptical about the impact of the consultation. A massive ninety per cent thought it would have either a small amount of influence or no influence.
PoliticsHome interviewed 1,083 adults by email between 25-28 June 2010. Results are weighted by age, gender and political party identification to reflect the population of Great Britain.
