As the controversy over David Cameron’s comments made on a visit to the US rumbles on, new PoliticsHome research indicates that almost half the public believe that the UK is too close to its ally.
Overall, forty six per cent of people agree with the statement that ‘the UK is too close to the US’, with only fifteen per cent holding the opposite view.
Thirty nine per cent did not agree with either.
Among supporters of all political parties, there was very little support for the view that the UK was not close enough to the US, with the majority of people thinking that the alliance was either 'too close' or 'neither too close nor not close enough'. Thirty eight per cent of Conservative supporters, along with fifty one per cent of Labour supporters and fifty two per cent of Lib Dems, thought that the relationship was too close.
The public tended to feel that in terms of its overall strategy, the UK should focus equally on building alliances with the US, other EU countries and emerging powers. Small proportions of people felt that any one of these in particular should be the main focus of foreign policy, while over a third (thirty six per cent) believed that all three areas should play an equal part in the country’s strategy.
PoliticsHome interviewed 1,003 adults by email from 20-21 July 2010. Results are weighted by age, gender and political party identification to reflect the population of Great Britain.
