As the government launches a consultation on how best to measure the nation’s wellbeing, PoliticsHome can reveal new research which suggests that the UK’s happiness tends to remain steady over long periods of time.
Each week for the majority of 2009, PoliticsHome asked a sample of over 1,000 adults to say how happy they had been that week on a scale of 1 to 10. For the whole period, the mean score varied only over a narrow band - between the boundaries of 5.9 and 6.4.
The research was conducted during the depth of the last recession, which underlines Britain’s reputation as a phlegmatic nation.
It also suggests the scale of the task facing a government seeking to push the national happiness graph upwards.
PoliticsHome interviewed a sample of over 1,000 voters each week from February-November 2009. The question asked was: ‘Looking back at this last week, how happy would you say you have been on average? Please give a rating from one to ten where 1 is "could not have been less happy" and 10 is "could not have been more happy"’
