The Downing Streets rats

The Downing Streets rats

When the cat’s away, the mice will play. But will the rats? Today's biggest story emerged when Number 10 announced that the Prime Minister will not be bringing back the Downing Street cat despite the fresh sightings of rats.  The reticence to welcome a new cat may be down to the unhappy time spent at Number 10 and 11 by the last Chief Mouser to the Cabinet. Alistair Darling’s furry friend Sybil moved in on September 2007, but was out of the door again in January 2009 after reportedly struggling to settle in London.

UPDATE: The Prime Minister is "not particularly concerned about the rat situation", his spokesman confirmed this afternoon. Asked how often the Downing Street bins are emptied, he added: "I've really no idea. I've really no idea at all". David Cameron has not held any formal conversations relating to the rat situation, he said.
