Maggie's back in Barnsley

Labour's candidate in the Barnsley Central by-election tomorrow seems a million miles from Eric Illsley.

Dan Jarvis is a telegenic former Paras Major who served in Afghanistan. He's a widower (his wife died from cancer) and lone parent to two young children. As he's still under 40, it's no wonder a lot of people are already saying he could have the makings of a future leader.

But for all Jarvis' modern, classless appeal, it seems that in Barnsley Labour thinks that raising the spectre of Maggie T is still a vote-winner.

Here's their latest leaflet:

Maybe the folks of Barnsley will respond.

Then again, it's worth remembering how tribal this area is. Dan Jarvis is the first non-Yorkshireman to stand for Labour in the seat since 1938. Good job he aint from Lancashire...

It was Scargill who stuffed Barnsley but try telling the thick yorkshire dumbos that. That a para major can stand for labour does make you ask questions about the army though. What excuses does he give for the way Brown stuffed the armed forces for 13 years. The Indy reports 'Labour's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan stretched the Army to its limit, special forces veteran Dan Jarvis has admitted'. yet he can support the party which sent him unprepared into Afghanistan in 2003.

Millsy

"He comes from Nottingham but is currently living in Hampshire." And he found the first safe seat he could get his hands on ...

David Boothroyd

Er, no he didn't. He's been in several selection contests before. And Dan Jarvis now lives in Barnsley, having moved there at the start of the campaign. None of the other candidates comes from the constituency anyway.

Graeme Hancocks

You are talking rubbish. My parents in law live in Barnsley central and will be voting for Dan Jarvis who they are very impressed with. They couldnt care elss where he comes from but recognize a good man.

Albert Hall

THey must be a bunch of dumbos if they vote labour again. Surely a case for IQ test for being granted the franchise.

Squigler

I see the nasty party is alive and kicking.

Albert Hall

So you prefer a government comprised of incompetents, shysters and thieves? One that leaves us with the worst deficit in the western world? I rest my case.

In our regiment, we used to say, "two things fall out of the sky- bird shit and paratroopers"

dorsetdumpling

Isn't it interesting that despite having an extremely telegenic candidate with a military background sure to appeal to the good folk of Barnsley, Labour feels the need to resort to a spite induced message. Is it because Dan Jarvis is not a Yorkshireman......are Labour worried about the so-called tribalism of Barnsley? What we want to know is, what answers do Labour have for the complete shambles of the economy, not forgetting the dire state of the MoD overspend they bequeathed to the nation?
