The public are more likely to see George Osborne’s conference speech as refreshingly honest than gloomily austere, according to results from a new PoliticsHome poll.
1,045 voters were show selections from Osborne’s speech and asked to say which interpretation they agreed more with.
Almost half (forty five per cent) said that it was ‘refreshingly honest’, while under a quarter (twenty four per cent) said that it was ‘gloomily austere’.
In addition, about a third of people said they had a better opinion of Osborne after watching the speech.
But the public are still split on the question of whether they see him as a credible future chancellor: forty one per cent do, while forty four per cent do not.
PoliticsHome interviewed 1,045 adults between 7-8 October 2009. Results are weighted by party ID to reflect the UK at large.
