News, gossip and insight from PoliticsHome Editor Paul Waugh

Laws is back

The rehabilitation of David Laws has started in earnest.

Today's Order Paper reveals that the former minister has been appointed to the Draft Financial Services Bill (Joint Committee).

Laws is listed as a member along with Nick Brown, Peter Lilley, David Mowat, George Mudie and David Ruffley.

Given that Laws has only just served his suspension from the House, it's pretty swift work...

Mind you, today is the day for Lib Dem rehabilitation. Chris Huhne has given not one, but two set-piece interviews ahead of his climate change speech.

Huhne was up early for Daybreak and then Today, his first forays into the studios since the speeding allegations broke.

Say what you like about the Energy Secretary, he's got balls of steel. He today insisted that there was "no truth" to the claims about his (alleged) Toad of Toad Hall driving skills and welcomed the Essex police investigation because it would put "an end to the matter".

The Huhnester was also the only Cabinet minister to make it to the Lobby launch of HuffPo on Tuesday night, where he was in animated conversation with Arianna H. Maybe they have a Greek connection...

UPDATE: Looks like this blog may have upset the applecart. For some reason known only to themselves, Government whips decided not to move the motion. So no vote was taken and Laws remains unappointed as yet.

Surely they can't have been thinking that they'd just get it through unnoticed...can they?

Be briefed for £1.50 a week...
