Understanding the heart of Westminster

Hain and Johnson wrong on BNP, say insiders

Only the Left supports the idea of a legal challenge over Nick Griffin's Question Time slot - most agree that such a challenge would be a mistake

Two-thirds of political insiders believe that attempting a legal challenge over British National Party leader Nick Griffin's scheduled appearance on Question Time this Thursday would be counterproductive.

This comes after Home Secretary Alan Johnson and Peter Hain both pointed out that the party is "illegally constituted", with Mr Hain suggesting it could be grounds for a legal challenge to the BBC's decision.

Johnson made his feelings known on last week’s edition of the programme, whilst Hain revealed today that he had written had written to BBC director general Mark Thompson on the matter.

However, 67% of political insiders believe Griffin’s appearance should go ahead, with one-quarter supporting a legal challenge.

The Phi100 panel is composed of Parliamentarians, journalists, think tank leaders and strategists from all parties and none, and offers a daily measure of the political temperature in Westminster.

There is a significant division across party lines – Johnson and Hain find support from a majority of left-aligned insiders, but very little from others across the political spectrum.

‘Any challenge makes Labour look silly - why is Straw willing to participate if Hain et al want to stop it?’, asked one non-aligned think tank leader.

There was a strong feeling from numerous panellists that a legal challenge would benefit the BNP. ‘Nick Griffin would love it if there was a legal challenge. Even better if the courts ban him from appearing on Question Time. What a perfect scenario - the hated politicians and their friends the judges united against the BNP. Truly, this country is run by idiots’, a political journalist said, whilst a right-aligned colleague agreed, saying ‘Don't make Griffin appear to be a martyr, show him to be an idiot.’

A right-aligned think tank leader said, ‘This sort of shenanigans plays into Griffin's hands. There is now daily wall-to-wall coverage of the BNP, thanks to the BBC in the first place, and now thanks to Johnson and Hain’.

A left-aligned think tank leader, however, was unrepentant in hoping for a legal challenge. “The BBC has a duty to uphold democratic, liberal values. I would argue it should militantly promote such values. It should not be a mirror for the ugly side of human nature, and they don't come any uglier than the BNP. Question Time is something of a national institution so by having them on there the BBC is implying that they accept them as part of the same warp and weft as the major, non-racist parties. People who voted for them last time will feel comforted, and people who thought about voting for them will feel encouraged to do so next time”, they said.

Well it is Labour voters that seem to be switching to the BNP

The BBC are right to allow him on Question Time this week but the show will be a complete pantomime. Heckling, booing and so on will help a lot of people feel better by shouting at Griffin in the studio or at the TV. Where the BNP should be is on Today or Newsnight where they can have their nonsense ripped to shreds by an attack dog.

I can understand Labour being annoyed by the BNP - their policies are identical with Labour, except for the racial aspect.

In addition, I am mystified as to how they can justify trying to prevent an elected politician from appearing on a Q&A show.

Have Half a Brain

What astounds me is the way the 'anti-fascists' are behaving worse than the so called 'fascists'. One cannot fail to notice that Mr Griffin conducts himself with decorum while other apparently democratic politicians and citizens foam at the mouth.

Denying the BNP democratic process is decidedly undemocratic and intolerant! So much for tolerant Britain. Twisting everything Mr Griffin says in order to get a rise leaves the 'twister' looking rabid and idiotic. While we may not agree with or like what the BNP have to say ... we should all be defending their right in a free and democratic society to say it.

Griffins views were made illegal by the labour government so to use that as an excuse to ban him from the bbc as suggested by Hain who also broke a new labour law  just shows what a rotten job this crowd of crooks called the government have made of everything that they attempt. Griffin and Hain hand in hand in the dock, one actually in court the other should have been in court instead of Harmans court ofpublic opinion.Jjohnson who is the top candidate to take over this set of idiots cannot even think of anything to say about Griffin except that he is a racist is so dimwitted that if Johnson doubled his IQ he would still would not make the grade as an idiot

Nick Griffin should be allowed on to Question Time or any other political debate.

He was like most other politicians elected to do so,and I think many people in this country would agree with a lot of what he says if they were not gaged by political correctness.

this country of our's believes in freedom of speach.and everyone in it of voting age has freedom of choice as to who they want to vote for .when a party has been voted for by so many people rightly or wrongly the leaders of any party  have the right of the platform to have their say.and i think the BBC have done the right thing by giving Nick Griffin his time on this programe.I watch this programe.and enjoy watching it and will be watching as i'm sure a lot of people will watch, choose what their beliefs are..
