The Labour Party has said it was "totally unacceptable" that one if its senior backbenchers cannot be reached by the public and has failed to hold a surgery for 14 years.
Sir Stuart Bell faces questions from his constituents after his local paper alleged he never holds meetings with residents and that his office failed to answer 100 calls between May and June.
A Labour spokesman told PoliticsHome: “Ed Miliband and the Labour Party expect the highest standards from Labour representatives.“It is totally unacceptable if the public cannot reach their MP. A number of allegations have been raised and these will be discussed with Sir Stuart.”
A member of his staff rejected the claims of unanswered calls and messages, and said Sir Stuart held regular surgeries by appointment rather than open surgeries as he felt it was the best way of dealing with local casework.
Commenting on the allegations, Sir Bell told PoliticsHome he "fully accepted" the statement by Ed Miliband and of course, is fully available to his constituency either in person, by telephone or any other means.
