As conference stories go, Catgate (or Catflap to its friends) has been a classic of the genre. But here's a wee sub-plot to Theresa May and Ken Clarke's feline* sparring.
It turns out that the PM himself was going to insert a cat joke into the Big Speech tomorrow. The gag was a gentle dig in the ribs of the Lib Dems: "The Liberals used to shoot your dog...now they steal your cat!"
The double reference was to Jeremy Thorpe's infamous trial from the 1970s and to John Hemming's recent court case about his wife stealing (or catnapping?) his mistress's cat. The older members of the audience would have laughed like drains.
Unfortunately just as Team Cam were congratulating themselves on this neat jibe, the Catflap broke out. It is now believed to be on the cutting room floor as the speechwriters finalise the PM's peroration.
Then again, a new, bolder Cameron could mischievously slip it back in again. Couldn't he?
*FOOTNOTE: The pic above is, of course, of Larry the Number 10 cat. He couldn't fit through a catflap if he tried.

I'm not sure whether this is acceptable anymore but, bizarrely, I remember it from the 70s: A dog loving homo called Scott, Whose bum was a Liberal spot, Said 'I don't mind being screwed, By a lewd Liberal dude, But I'm f**ked if I'm going to get shot'. I'll get my coat.
