Boris was right: we miss Tony on Afghanistan

Insiders back Boris Johnson's assertion that Blair would have made a better case for the Afghanistan campaign than Brown.

Political insiders agree with Boris Johnson’s assertion that Tony Blair would have made a better case than Gordon Brown for the continued British presence in Afghanistan.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Johnson said, “I never thought I'd say this, but the abject failure of Gordon Brown to offer a clear and inspiring explanation of what we are doing in Afghanistan is not only a failure of leadership. It is just about the only time we have missed Tony Blair.”

87% agreed with Johnson, including strong majorities across party lines – and 100% agreement from right-leaning insiders.

The Phi100 panel is comprised of MPs, peers, journalists, think tank leaders, academics and strategists from across all political leanings.

"About 500% better"

A Liberal Democrat MP said, “Blair’s case would be about 500% better!”

A Conservative MP said, “I agree it would have been better, but after Iraq, no-one would have believed him.”

Another Liberal Democrat MP said, “More, but not better. Blair was completely discredited in respect of the 'just war' argument. Brown not yet so.”

Another journalist said, “Blair is a better communicator but real problem is with Obama.”
