The Conservatives’ plans for welfare, set out in a speech by David Cameron this week, have been given a broad backing by Westminster insiders.
The party’s plans, which include greater involvement of third sector organisations and increasing the back-to-work financial incentive, were termed ‘about right’ by 28% of insiders, whilst a further 39% believe the plans are on the right track, but should go further.
A majority of right-aligned insiders and half of non-aligned insiders would like to see Cameron's plans go further.
The Phi100 panel is comprised of MPs, peers, journalists, think tank leaders, academics and strategists from across all political leanings, giving a daily insight into sentiment at the highest level of British politics.
A journalist said, “More stick, less carrot please!”
A right-aligned strategist said, “This is great news - voluntary organisations are more motivated to do good than public sector pen pushers.”
