A senior Labour MP has accused Ed Miliband of making a "fundamental error" in ordering his MPs to vote down a motion calling for a referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union.
Former party whip Graham Stringer told PoliticsHome he would defy his party's whip to vote down the motion, which will be debated in the House of Commons on Monday. Mr Miliband announced today that he would instruct Labour MPs to vote against the motion. The Labour leader said he believed the vote will be "irresponsible and a terrible distraction".
Mr Stringer said: "It's inappropriate to have a whip on what is essentially a backbench business in respect of an e-petition. I have made my position clear on this and I am going to vote for the motion.
"The leadership are making a fundamental error in doing this."
The Liberal Democrats have also signalled that they will encourage their MPs to vote down the motion, in spite of a pledge in their 2010 election manifesto that the party would hold a referendum on whether Britain should stay in the EU. Today one of their backbench MPs told PoliticsHome he was considering submitting an amendment calling for a referendum to take place following a renegotiation between the United Kingdom and the EU.
John Hemming said that he did not support Monday's motion, adding: "My view is that we will need to renegotiate the relationship between the UK and EU following the resolution of the issues in the eurozone. It is entirely possible that the correct solution is for the UK to be part of a modified EEA.
"However, the time for a referendum is once there has been a renegotiation. Given that the motion calls for one option to be a renegotiation, what is really needed is to renegotiate in any event."
