Vince Cable is taking a keen interest in the Lib Dem campaign in the Feltham & Heston by-election.
It's no wonder, given that his nearby Twickenham seat is to be butchered by the Boundary Commission.
Large chunks are going to Zac Goldsmith and he will have to absorb the Feltham seat in the new Teddington and Hanworth constituency.
Vince has now written the following letter urging Lib Dems to get campaigning asap. As well as Vince himself, Paul Burstow and Simon Hughes are both on the stump this weekend.
The party will have a candidate in place by Tuesday, a bit slower than the Tories (who already have a candidate) and Labour* (who select on Sunday night).
No one expects the Libs to win the by-election, but this is much more about getting Feltham & Heston's voters (traditionally split in a simple Lab-Tory fight) thinking of the Lib Dems...and a certain Uncle Vince. In supermarkets, they'd call it a 'loss leader'.
Here's the letter (with names redacted):

*FOOTNOTE: As for Labour, I hear the favoured candidates that Victoria Street would like to see installed are both young Asian women. Seema Malhotra and Tulip Siddiq are in the running for Sunday night. Former MP Parmjit Dhanda has apparently not been longlisted.
