We told you we couldn’t be trusted... oh wait, we didn’t

We told you we couldn’t be trusted... oh wait, we didn’t As the furore over the PiP implants rumbles on in Parliament, the cosmetic industry is keen to portray itself as a cheeky schoolboy desperately seeking firm discipline. Fazal Fatah, President of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, has joined politicians from both sides of the commons in calling for greater regulation of the industry. It would seem even those within the industry believe it cannot be trusted and just runs amok if given too much free rein to do as it wanted.

Yet this is a distinctly different attitude to the one adopted previously by the industry's trade group the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA). The industry’s line has generally been self regulation is sufficient to ensure that “cosmetics are safe” as CTFA’s website proclaims. Indeed, as late as 2010 the Independent Healthcare Advisory Service (IHAS) revealed it's code of practice for the industry was entirely voluntary and could not enforce regulation. Incidentally IHAS is funded by the industry. Funny then that they would not want an enforcible regulation.

It seems the industry only craves stern discipline when it’s been found out, just like the cheeky schoolboy.
