John Prescott has always been more sledgehammer than rapier, and nobility hasn’t mellowed him. But in the Lords yesterday evening, in the midst of a harrumphing charge at the intrusive British press, he was poleaxed by a far subtler wit.
Lord Tebbit was watching Prezza like a hawk and, when he'd finished, unleashed this beauty:
“Would it not be in the public interest for the press to publish, however they gained knowledge of it, activities by a minister in his working time in his office which were quite clearly contrary to all standards of decency and to the Government's own code of conduct for ministers?"
The reference to the Temple affair was as subtle as can be, yet it squatted in the chamber like an elephant in ermine.
