John Bercow has insisted that he is not worried about reports that the Palace of Westminster is slipping into the Thames.
Responding to a Point of Order by Conservative MP Robert Halfon, the Speaker hit out at the "downmarket rags" who had carried the story over the weekend.
"I am grateful for his concern for all those who work or even live within the precincts within the Palace of Westminster. I’ve know the Honourable Gentleman for over 20 years and I have never regarded him as an inveterate worrier. As he can see, I am not worried.
"He shouldn’t believe everything he reads in the newspapers, or in those even more downmarket rags who, in so describing themselves, almost certainly are breaching the trade descriptions act. Getting over-excited is their trade. Keeping calm and doing the right thing is ours."
