Portcullis row rumbles on

Portcullis row rumbles on

Dr Jonathan Drori made a bit of a splash at the admin committee earlier this month. The chair of the Speaker’s Advisory Council on Public Engagement raised some eyebrows when he suggested that Parliament’s portcullis loog should be scrapped. He claimed that evidence showed the public thought it unwelcoming. "I know it has a great history but it's seen by the public as a gate to keep people out," he said, to the consternation of some MPs. Yesterday Dr Ruth Fox from the Hansard Society was asked about his comments. “I am not aware of that research,” she commented as MPs nodded vigorously. She said that during her extensive research into the public perception of Parliament that the issue of the logo “did not come up at all”. However, she did tell the committee that only 27% of people see Parliament as “welcoming”.
