Meyer takes no prisoners

Meyer takes no prisoners

Former Press Complaints Commission chairman Sir Christopher Meyer was on fighting form today as he faced the Leveson inquiry.

Sir Christopher made it clear he would give as good as he got early on, asking Robert Jay QC to ease up on the "amateur psychology" in his line of questioning.

After his charming revelation that Rupert Murdoch had no time for the last Tory government because he thought John Major was "a loser", Sir Christopher seemed to have food on the brain as he responded snappily to his interrogator.

"I hope you'll forgive me if I do from time to time push back, rather than sit here like a coconut."

He was no more forgiving when asked about his investigation of former Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas:

"Do you think I would have spent good PCC money on meetings with Mr Thomas at restaurants just to hear him burbling away? No, I wanted beef, Mr Jay, I wanted red meat."

Perhaps the old boy's stomach was just giving him a bit of bother in the run-up to the lunch break.
