Labour MP Kate Green has demanded that a beer called Top Totty be withdrawn from sale in a Commons bar.
At the Business Question today she said:
"Could the Leader of the House arrange a debate on dignity at work in Parliament. I was disturbed last night to learn that the guest beer in the Stranger's Bar is called Top Totty and there is a picture of a nearly naked woman on the tap. As well as arranging a debate would the leader of the House join with me in asking that this beer be withdrawn immediately from sale in the bar."
Commons Leader Sir George Young replied: "I would very much regret it if any offensive pictures were on display in any part of the House. I will raise the matter through the commission with the appropriate officer of the House."
Top Totty has been a top seller. A Strangers Bar source told PoliticsHome:
"We have a new guest ale every week, they are nominated by MPs .
"We started selling Top Torry in the bar on Tuesday and we expect it to sell out by the end of the week."
Top Totty is brewed in Stafford and was nominated by the town's MP, Conservative Jeremy Lefroy.
A Commons spokesman has confirmed that the beer has now been withdrawn from sale.
Mr Lefroy has issued the following statement:
"Slater’s Ale, an independent family run brewery in my constituency, produce this award winning beer, which has proved very popular as a guest ale in many local pubs across the country. The beer has been on sale in the Strangers bar in the House of Commons since Tuesday [31st January]. It is the second time it has featured as a guest ale, first appearing in 2007.
"I invited Slater’s to put forward a guest ale to the bar following a visit to the brewery site in Stafford as I am keen to support local businesses and British beer. This is their top selling and award winning beer and proved popular with House of Commons drinkers in 2007.
"These guest ale slots offer a very welcome opportunity for small independent breweries, like Slater’s, to reach a wider audience with their products, some of which have cheeky names. However, I can understand that some people may take offence to the marketing, which I am sorry about."
