Hansard muddles up FCO ministers

Are standards at the usually word-perfect Hansard slipping? The transcribers of Parliamentary debates made a rare howler yesterday afternoon, when it managed to get its ministers in a muddle during the Commons debate on Syria. Labour MP Denis MacShane showed some cross-party affection by praising the Foreign Office minister Alistair Burt for his strong performance on The World this Weekend. Despite Burt offering MacShane a cheery wave of thanks and receiving a glance of encouragement from Foreign Secretary William Hague, Hansard saw things differently. "Mr Denis MacShane (Rotherham) (Lab): The Foreign Secretary cannot be faulted in the handling of this crisis and, if I may say so, his Minister of State, the hon. Member for Taunton Deane (Mr Browne), was very impressive on the BBC yesterday." No doubt a first rate minister as well, Jeremy Browne's South American remit doesn’t take him too close to Syria ...
