Understanding the heart of Westminster

No way, BA

There is no appetite in the political community for nationalising British Airways should it fall into further difficulty in the new year

New PoliticsHome research reveals that there would be little political will behind nationalising the ailing airline should its present difficulties continue.

The company is beset by industrial action and is in negotiations with Iberia over a possible merger.

The PoliticsHome Phi100 panel of parliamentarians, senior political journalists and other insiders were asked what their view would be should BA’s current difficulties continue.

An overwhelming eighty two per cent majority would not support nationalisation.  This section of the panel includes majorities from all political parties.

A small section (eighteen per cent) disagree and would rather see the company nationalised than collapse completely.

 Market justice

A Labour parliamentarian said ‘Let (market) justice prevail, though the heavens fall!’

A non-aligned media panellist commented: ‘Its just a company in a competitive market - if it cannot control its costs it must be allowed to fail.’

It would be nice to see these overpaid union officials offering to join their members in taking a cut.
