Chuka Umunna MP, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, responding to reports that ministers are attempting to block the appointment of Les Ebdon as Director of the Office for Fair Access, said:
“The Government should be focused on appointing the best person to fill the vacant job as Director of the Office of Fair Access, not playing politics over what is a vital role.
“Les Ebdon’s appointment is being used as a political football by Coalition Ministers. This is a shoddy way to treat someone who has devoted decades of his life to serving our universities and students and who was awarded a CBE for his contribution to the higher education sector. The way Professor Ebdon has been treated will hardly encourage others to seek leadership positions in important institutions like OFFA.
“Ministers need to act to end the infighting and ensure that an appointment is made swiftly in the best interests of our young people. Sadly this episode creates yet more uncertainty for universities and students thanks to this Government’s haphazard approach.”
