Westminster News from Paul Waugh

The Waugh Room

News, gossip and insight from PoliticsHome Editor Paul Waugh

Balls gets his Chief

I hear that Ed Balls has got a new chief of staff. And guess what? He's from the world of finance.

Gary Follis, who was head of policy at the Nationwide Building Society, will start work sometime in April after his appointment was confirmed today.

Follis worked for the Alliance & Leicester a few years back too, so knows the financial sector pretty well.

But at Westminster he's better known as the former spad for Nick Brown during his Chief Whip days, and then Rosie Winterton in the Shadow post. As a result, he knows Parliamentary procedure and Labour politics inside out.

I guess it's a good job for Labour that Follis worked for a nice, cuddly building society rather than a wicked out-and-out bank.

In fact, Follis only recently lambasted RBS for threatening its account holders with a ban on using rivals' ATMs for free.

The Ulsterman replaces Caroline Abrahams, who is off to beome director of external affairs at Age UK.

What's perhaps interesting is that Follis is the first of the old guard to actually start returning to Labour. After an exodus in 2010 and early 2011, the traffic isn't looking so one-way.
