Political parties receive nearly £7m in donations

By James Dwyer

Nine UK political parties accepted a total of almost £7m in donations in the last quarter of 2011.

Figures released today by the Electoral Commission reveal the Conservative Party received the most, taking in £3,220,562. Labour was given £2,315,038 and the Liberal Democrats £1,076,469.

The report by the Electoral Commission criticises the Conservatives for the late submission of four donations totalling £134,711.

Lisa Klein, Director of Party and Election Finance at the Electoral Commission, said:

“Over the last year, political parties have got better at reporting their donations and loans. However, I am concerned that the Conservative Party submitted such a large amount late. I have written to them seeking an explanation.

“Political parties must submit their funding details in a timely and accurate manner. Transparency is an important factor when it comes to maintaining trust and confidence in politics.”

In 2011 as a whole, political parties received £34,642,768 in donations and £9,120,204 in public funds.

Four of the ten largest donations were made to the Labour Party by unions, totalling £1,575,664. The Conservatives received £125,452 from multi-millionaire Peter Cruddas, whilst the Liberal Democrats were given £153,267 by the Ministry of Sound.
