Chris Nicholson, Chief Executive of CentreForum, the liberal think tank, has welcomed the news that the government is planning to move to local pay bargaining over much of the public sector.
"This is very good news. It shows that the government is serious about enabling greater development of the private sector in many parts of the country. Professor Alison Wolf argued for such a policy in her paper for CentreForum "More than we bargained for" published in February 2010. Some parts of the country have public sector pay 10-15% higher than private sector pay for similar jobs. That cannot be right."
