George the Muslim?

George Galloway is in a last push to get the vote out in the Bradford West by-election. Though Labour are still odds-on favourites, the bookies have slashed his odds to 10/3 after a very large bet was placed on the former Respect MP.

But the bitter battle for Asian voters in the seat looks like it's taken another twist.

One local* has sent me a rather eye-catching letter being distributed by Respect campaigners in local mosques. It includes the following section:

"God KNOWS who is a Muslim and he KNOWS who is not...I, George Galloway, do not drink alcohol and never have.. I, George Galloway have fought for Muslims at home and abroad, all of my life..."

He also refers to 'the Grace of God' and says 'if God wills it' he will give his remaining days in service of all the people of Bradford West.

A spokesman for the Galloway campaign tells me they decided to hit back at what they say are Labour claims that voters should back their candidate Imran Hussein because he is a Muslim.

Labour sources in turn say that this is 'typical opportunism' from Galloway.

Either way, here's his letter in full:

UPDATE

Labour have responded to George's letter, a spokesperson saying:

"This bizarre and deeply insulting letter from Respect is what we've come to expect from George Galloway. He's losing the argument in this election so is resorting to the desperate approach of making personal attacks on his opponents.

"Labour's working hard for every vote - only a vote for Labour can send a strong message to David Cameron that his out of touch government's budget - with its tax break for millionaires paid for by a granny tax and raiding the pockets of hard-pressed working families - has failed the people of Bradford."

Be briefed for £1.50 a week...
