Panel: City prefers Ken Clarke to George Osborne as Chancellor

New research conducted by PoliticsHome and City AM suggests that City workers would prefer Ken Clarke to George Osborne as Chancellor. Vince Cable is in third place.

The City would prefer Ken Clarke to George Osborne as Chancellor of the Exchequer, according to a panel recruited from London’s financial and business community.

The City AM/PHI panel of City workers, specially recruited by City AM to represent a cross section of London's financial community, were asked to pick their top choice from a list of six possible candidates for Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Clarke, who held the role from 1993 to 1997, was the first choice of thirty six per cent of the City panel.

George Osborne was in second place, with the backing of twenty three per cent of respondents.

Vince Cable was a close third, supported by twenty per cent.

The City AM/PHI panel comprises a wide cross section of London’s  financial and business establishment, including a large proportion of senior decision makers such as company directors, CEOs, analysts and investment managers.

Earlier this week, survey results suggested an overwhelming view within the City that an outright Conservative majority would be the best election result for the British economy.

But this poll for the first time lends credence to the often reported view that the City harbours doubts about George Osborne’s ability to make the transition to Chancellor in a Tory government.

Ken Clarke was the preferred choice of Conservative supporters as well as non aligned panellists.

Alistair Darling was the preferred choice of Labour supporters, while Lib Dems backed Vince Cable.

PoliticsHome interviewed 367 City workers recruited by City AM by email on 10 March 2010.

It must be Ed Balls then...

Mr. D. Simpson

At least Ken and George are on the same side. One thing this poll indicates is the complete lack of trust in Mandleson. Just look at his awful ratings.
