Understanding the heart of Westminster

Political community now more optimistic about the recession

The political community is gaining in economic confidence, according to the latest PoliticsHome insider research

More than twice as many panellists are pleasantly surprised than pessimistic More than twice as many panellists are pleasantly surprised than pessimistic

The latest PoliticsHome Phi100 survey – a daily poll of political experts and insiders – reveals that the political community is becoming more optimistic about the likely severity of this recession.

The panel – which includes MPs and peers, senior political journalists, key party strategists and think tank policy experts – were asked whether they thought the recession was going to be better or worse than they had previously thought.

The percentage now thinking that it would be better than they had previously thought (thirty per cent) was over twice as large as those reckoning it would now be worse than they had previously thought (twelve per cent).

About half the panel (forty per cent) had not changed its mind.

Left more optimistic

Those on the left were much more likely to have revised their opinion upwards.  Just under half of them now had a more optimistic outlook.

In contrast, only seventeen per cent of those on the right and fourteen per cent of Lib Dems were now more optimistic.
