Being Father of the House gives a certain historical insight that eludes most Members, and that was certainly the case today as Sir Peter Tapsell gave a warning from the past about plans to end male primogeniture in the Royal Family.
“Would our Deputy Prime Minister… bear in mind that, but for our law of male primogeniture, the German Kaiser would also have become King of England, which would have produced almost as interesting a coalition as the present one?” Sir Peter asked at DPMQs.
In reply Nick Clegg praised Sir Peter’s “erudition”, but added that was “not reason enough not to modernise the rules of succession and bring them into keeping with the 21st Century”.
