Ladbrokes press release
THE EASTLEIGH by-election looks set to break betting records according to Ladbrokes.
The bookies report that the previous record for bets struck on a by-election (set in Glasgow East in 2008) has been smashed in a matter of days as politics enthusiasts and local residents alike come out and stake their claim with up to £250,000 set to be wagered on the outcome across the industry.
Each change in the odds can also be attributed to the ebb and flow of local opinion with the latest movement seeing favourites the Liberal Democrats shorten to 4/6 following Maria Hutchings' comments regarding state schools. Consequently the Conservatives drift to 6/4 with Labour also out to 10/1 having seen their odds fall to an all time low of 8/1 earlier in the week. UKIP remain 25/1 shots.
Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: "We've never known a by-election as big for betting. The excitement in Eastleigh has driven a record number to have a bet."
He added: "With more people locally putting their money where their mouth is we feel the odds are just as accurate as polls when it comes to calling the outcome."
