Today the Lib Dems’ Eastleigh campaign plunged into further turmoil as Nick Clegg told the Daily Echo that “we make no apology” for his Party's plans to build 5,000 houses on green spaces, despite their campaign’s promise to protect green spaces.
The Lib Dem candidate admitted in the same newspaper: “we have to use green spaces”. This is less than 24 hours after he told the St Thomas’ Church Hustings that the Lib Dem plan he had “voted for” was “not fantastic for everybody”.
Conservative Party Chairman Grant Shapps said:
“Nick Clegg has pushed the Lib Dem campaign into turmoil. He says he makes ‘no apology’ for planning to concrete over Eastleigh's countryside. His candidate says ‘we have to use green spaces’. And yet the Liberal Democrat campaign promises to ‘protect our precious green spaces and countryside’.
"If the Lib Dems have any respect for Eastleigh voters, then Nick Clegg must explain his Party's misleading campaign."
