David Miliband public choice for Labour leader

David Miliband has a clear lead over other potential leadership contenders in the view of voters.

David Miliband is currently the clear favourite of voters to become the next Labour leader, according to new PoliticsHome research featured in today's Evening Standard

Twenty one per cent of voters, including a third of Labour supporters, see the former foreign secretary as the best person to become next Labour leader.

The results puts David Miliband clearly ahead of the field by a margin of more than ten percentage points.

In second place is his brother Ed, who announced his leadership bid at the weekend.

Despite ruling himself out, former Home Secretary Alan Johnson is in third place on seven per cent.

Other parties

David Miliband has the largest lead among supporters of his own party.  He is also clearly ahead among Conservative supporters.  However, Lib Dems and the non aligned are more optimistic about the prospect of Ed Miliband as leader, putting him much closer behind his brother.

PoliticsHome interviewed 1,211 adults by email from 14-17 May 2010.  Results are weighted by age, gender and political party identification to reflect the population of Great Britain.
