Green groups warn on fossil fuels

The Government's new energy bill is likely to leave the UK dependent on gas, environmental groups have warned. The Electricity Market Reform bill was originally conceived to promote nuclear power, but problems with the cost of subsidies and fears about the commercial viability of nuclear generators have led to a number of power companies dropping out.

Hague urges green emphasis

William Hague has urged his fellow Cabinet members to place a greater emphasis on green industries, in a leaked letter which emerged today. The letter states "we should reframe our response to climate change as an imperative for growth" and sets out proposals for how the Government can refocus on the issue.

Standpipes by next year, minister warns

Standpipes could be back on the streets of Britain next year if there is another dry winter, the Environment Secretary has warned. Speaking to the BBC TV programme Inside Out, Caroline Spelman said: “Whereas it’s most unlikely we would have standpipes this year, if we have another dry winter that becomes more likely.”  

Lord Smith backs fracking

The chair of the Environment Agency, Lord Smith, is expected to declare his support for shale gas extraction, or 'fracking'.

The former Labour cabinet minister will announce that the environmental concerns about the practice can be mitigated by careful monitoring. He will also lend his support to an expansion of nuclear power in the UK.

PM: Green energy must be affordable

Renewable energy sources must be "financially sustainable" if they are to have a chance of meeting the world's needs, David Cameron will say today. Opening the Clean Energy Ministerial meeting of international leaders in London, the Prime Minister will praise the progress made by the UK in the "green energy revolution", but will warn that the challenge now is to cut down costs.
