The Government's new energy bill is likely to leave the UK dependent on gas, environmental groups have warned. The Electricity Market Reform bill was originally conceived to promote nuclear power, but problems with the cost of subsidies and fears about the commercial viability of nuclear generators have led to a number of power companies dropping out.

It is vital that Europe implements a 30% cut in carbon emissions by 2020, Nick Clegg and Ed Davey have said. Writing in the Guardian, the Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Secretary insist that ambitious targets for reducing emissions will "help grow our low-carbon industries", ensuring Europe remains competitive as well as boosting the UK economy.
The 'Big Six' energy companies have come under attack after it was revealed that they had asked to extend the deadline for introducing energy saving programmes for customers. Under an agreement made with the Labour government in 2009, energy companies have an obligation to offer energy saving measures to customers in poor or deprived areas at little or no cost. Shadow Energy Secretary Caroline Flint called on the Government not to let energy companies "off the hook" and to ensure that they "met their obligations".
