PM rejects new Lockerbie inquiry

David Cameron has rejected calls for a new inquiry into the conviction of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi after the Lockerbie bomber died in Tripoli yesterday.

The Prime Minister said the court case that convicted al-Megrahi had been properly conducted. A Number 10 spokeswoman repeated his words this morning, saying: "In his view the process has been gone through, there has been a case and in his view there is no need for an inquiry."

A statement from the campaign group Justice for Megrahi - which includes Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Noam Chomsky, among others - demanded an independent review of the previous case.

Labour leader Ed Miliband backed Mr Cameron: "Unless there’s new evidence that’s come forward, we’ve had a whole trial, a long and painstaking trial which took place, it was done in a proper court of law. I think if there is new evidence, of course I’m sure the Prime Minister himself would say ‘let’s look at that’."

Govt plans social housing income cap

Downing Street has backed plans to introduce a new household income threshold above which social tenants must pay full market rent.

The Government is expected to introduce proposals to cap rent subsidy at a household income above £60,000, according to the Guardian, and will go ahead with a consultation paper next month.

Supporters say the change is necessary to remove unfairness in the system and to prioritise social housing for the poor.

Darling hosts anti-Scottish independence summit

Former chancellor Alistair Darling confirmed this morning that he has been hosting cross-party talks on stopping Scottish independence.

Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show on BBC One, Mr Darling said he had held several such meetings over the last few months, explaining "there will be a campaign to persuade people that we're better remaining in the UK".

The Mail on Sunday reports that a recent gathering included Downing Street director of political strategy Andrew Cooper, Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander, Shadow Defence Secretary Jim Murphy and former Scottish Conservative leader David McLetchie, along with Euan Roddin, special adviser to Liberal Democrat Scottish Secretary Michael Moore.

Mr Darling said anti-independence campaign will involve people from all political parties as well as "people of no party".
