Nick Clegg's overall approval rating as leader of the Liberal Democrat Party has soared in recent weeks, gaining twelve percentage points on David Cameron, who is currently leading the PoliticsHome Leadership Performance Tracker.
Every week, the public are asked to rate the leaders of the major parties on their performance by stating whether they think that the politicians are doing a good job or a bad job. The number of bad job responses are then subtracted from the number of good job responses to give an overall rating.
The figures show Clegg has moved from a position sixteen percentage points behind Cameron to just four points behind in a four week period. The public's overall rating of Clegg's leadership was eleven percent in mid-April, but the latest figures show it to be twenty three percent.
Clegg's handling of the Gurkha settlement issue appears to have been received well by voters with his approval rating increasing five percent (from fourteen percent to nineteen percent) the week following the government's defeat in the House of Commons on the Gurkha bill on April 29. He has continued to do well throughout the row over MPs' expenses, rising four percentage points since last week.
Gordon Brown's overall leadership approval rating has been languishing at around negative forty four percent over the same period.
Figures used are rolling averages of approval ratings from the previous three weeks from a sample of over 1,000 voters. Results are weighted by party ID to reflect the UK at large.
