Public opinion today

Climate change is exaggerated by the media, say large majority of Tory voters

They also believe the government places too much emphasis upon the issue

As delegates from 192 countries descend on Copenhagen to discuss climate change, a new PoliticsHome survey has revealed that a large majority of Conservative voters believe the threat is exaggerated by the media.

74% of Conservative voters believe the media exaggerate the threat of climate change from global warming. 15% of them believe the media get it about right, and 9% are of the opinion that the media don’t take the threat seriously enough.

Only 35% of Labour supporters and 30% of Lib Dem believe the media are overreacting to the danger of global warming.

Government priorities wrong, say Tories

Conservative supporters also believe that global warming should be less of a priority for the government.

PoliticsHome asked respondents first to rate, on a scale of one to ten, how high or low a priority they think the government places on addressing climate change, and then how high or low a priority they think the government should place on addressing climate change. The difference between these numbers was used to determine the public's views upon government priorities.

Conservatives were the only group that believed the government placed more emphasis than they should upon climate change.

PoliticsHome interviewed 1154 voters by email between 4-6 December 2009.  Results are weighted by party ID to reflect the UK at large.

Yet another thing conservative supporters have got right.

As usual, the Government attempts to demonise its opponents. We are not 'climate change deniers' but people who have scientific questions about the validity of the data being used. And yes, I have read all the bloody reports, and checked the raw data that's been published, and I'm a scientist, and I've still got big concerns about the validity of the data.

If this is meant to be a scientific debate, then why won't the CRU answer the criticisms? If it's just a slag-off, then I suggest slagging off this Government is rather like taking candy from babies.

Can we get a cast iron guarantee on that please
mmm maybe not the torycon's never keep there word anway lolololol

Hardly surprising!  Lefties just love a good do-goodie campaign to make them feel superior without actually giving anything up.

Me, I'm a scientist and I believe in reducing pollution and population (and, if I am the last person to leave the UK, you can trust me to turn off the lights!): most other problems with our planet, real or imaginary, will then sort themselves out over time.  Climate is a moving average and as such it moves!

Cole

Just shows how very dim the Tories are!

B E Brill

This was probably an inevitable result of the increasing shrillness of left-wing activists, and the emphasis on "hairshirt energy policies".

The left/right split on this issue has broken cover in Australia, Canada and USA. Cameron won't be able to resist it much longer.

Can someone explain the results of the second table to me?  Why does it show that most members of the 4 groups think climate change should be more of a priority, yet the totals say something completely different?  Surely the only explaination would be a vast weighting to the Tories...or I've misread it.

Someone, anyone, please explain these numbers to me!?

Thanks.

Numbers say one thing, how they are interpreted is a totally different thing - this is how they keep unemployment fogures below 3 million when in fact there are at least a million more people not included as they are on "training"  or "work experience "  courses. They're still unemployed, but put on a different list. This is why you can get two differing "results" from the same set of figures - the spin doctors use different interpretations to suit their agenda. The only way to get the truth is to look at the figures yourself and make up your own mind .

Anyone who believes that the threat of global warming is anything more than a politically motivated scam should read the book by Christopher Booker "The Real Global Warming Disaster" which was published about 2 months ago.  This is a magisterial, minutely researched and referenced, comprehensive analysis of everything that has led to the world being in the position it is today.  It is an absolutely horrifying story of how vested interests can get in the way of real science.
