The Unite union announced this morning that BAE systems is to axe close to 1,000 jobs mainly in its military division. BAE has since confirmed that the job cuts will occur at five UK sites in East Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Hampshire and two in Lancashire. The firm said that the cuts were a result of changes in the defence programme announced in December, as well as "other workload changes".
Nick Clegg in a speech at the institute of directors has proposed an end to political short-termism. The deputy prime minister said that long-term decisions on public spending cuts might be difficult, painful and unpopular but the coalition government was acting in the best interests of the nation.
