MPs have approved the second reading of the Superannuation Bill, which caps civil service redundancy payments. Introducing the legislation, Cabinet secretary Francis Maude said existing payments are unfair to workers in the private sector and "lower paid civil servants suffer disproportionally under the current scheme". Opponents believe the legislation is designed to manipulate ongoing talks between government and civil service unions.
MPs have kept the News of the World phone hacking scandal alive, with home affairs select committee chairman Keith Vaz announcing a new inquiry after top metropolitan police officer John Yates had appeared before the committee.
