A majority of the public would welcome the legalisation of at least some currently illegal drugs, new PoliticsHome research has found.
In a new poll of 1,292 voters, 52% of people believed that either some or all currently illegal drugs should be legalised.
19% supported the legalisation of all currently illegal drugs.
Majorities of Labour and Liberal Democrat supporters as well as non-aligned voters supported the legalisation of some currently illegal drugs, with Conservative supporters the only group to buck this trend.
The result follows the recent publication of a report by the UK drug policy commission calling for a 'smarter' drug policy.
PoliticsHome interviewed 1,292 UK adults between 31 July - 3 August 2009. Results are weighted by party ID to reflect the UK at large.
