Labour's last-minute plan to stop East Coast privitisation

Labour has launched a last-minute plan to stop the sell-off of the East Coast Main Line rail route.

The Daily Mirror reveals Shadow Transport Secretary Michael Dugher has written to the Department for Transport’s permanent secretary to urge him to intervene during the 30-day period before Virgin signs the contract taking control of the franchise.

Labour is also launching an online petition calling for the Government to reconsider its decision.

Labour MPs challenge PM on News Corp

Labour MPs Tom Watson and Michael Dugher have accused David Cameron of evading questions after the prime minister has yet to give details to parliament of his meetings with executives at Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation. Mr Dugher said: "The prime minister promised transparency yet all we have had is evasion".

Junior shadow ministers emerge

The Labour party has announced in full the new appointments to the shadow front benches. Newly elected MPs Rachel Reeves, Johnny Reynolds, Tom Greatrex, Luciana Berger and Gloria De Piero have been given junior positions. Longer serving MPs including failed Labour leadership contender Diane Abbott, Wayne David, Andy Slaughter, Karen Buck and Alison Sebeck have also been given roles. Chuka Umunna and Anne McGuire have been appointed as private parliamentary secretaries (PPS) to new Labour leader Ed Miliband. Some notable omissions from the list include Ben Bradshaw, David Lammy, Tom Harris and Pat McFadden who all stood for shadow cabinet positions.
