MP warns on search and rescue closure

Shutting down two search-and-rescue helicopter bases might 'cost lives', Louise Ellman, chairman of the Commons transport select committee, has warned in a letter to Patrick McLoughlin. She argued that the Government hadn't listened to the views of people in planning their closure of RAF Boulmer and Portland, "despite compelling arguments that these closures may cost lives".

Credit rating determined Bombardier deal

A "superior credit rating" led to the German firm Siemens beating Bombardier to a £1.4bn government contract, the Transport Select Committee has said.

The Committee's report also called for a National Audit Office review of the deal which handed the contract to Siemens, whose credit rating is A+ rather than the British Bombardier, whose rating is B++.

Committee chair Louise Ellman said: "We could not evaluate whether the decision to choose Siemens was arrived at correctly because all of the bids were and remain confidential."

The son of Labour MP Louise Ellman is one of the UK's biggest dealers of the legal high mephedrone, better known as meow meow, according to the Sun.

West Coast line deal pushed ahead

A deal that would see Virgin Trains losing the West Coast mainline franchise could be signed as early as 29 August, a Department for Transport spokesman has indicated. Labour MP Louise Ellman, who also chairs the Transport Committee, has written to Transport Secretary Justine Greening asking for "greater transparency" and investigation of "a number of concerns" over the deal. Over 100,000 people signed an e-petition calling for reconsideration of the decision to award the West Coast mainline rail franchise to FirstGroup. The petition will be considered for debate in Parliament.

MP 'disapproves' of legal high drug son

Labour MP Louise Ellman has said she "disapproves" of her son's business activities after it emerged yesterday that her son is one of the UK's biggest dealers of the legal high mephedrone.
