Labour last night called on the George Osborne to cut VAT instead of the 50p top rate of tax. Angela Eagle, shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said that a VAT cut would be a far more reliable way of kick starting the economy and helping the average family in Britain. The call came after it was reported that the Chancellor is considering scrapping the 50p top rate of tax after being told it is generating only marginal returns for the Exchequer.

Manufacturing production has fallen for the first time in two years, according to new figures. The Markit/CIPS PM Index showed output fell for the first time since June 2009, with orders down for the first time since July 2009.
