Labour: 'Cut VAT not top tax rate'

Labour last night called on the George Osborne to cut VAT instead of the 50p top rate of tax. Angela Eagle, shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said that a VAT cut would be a far more reliable way of kick starting the economy and helping the average family in Britain. The call came after it was reported that the Chancellor is considering scrapping the 50p top rate of tax after being told it is generating only marginal returns for the Exchequer.

Michael Salter, David Cameron's broadcast advisor, has been named the UK's eighth most influential gay person by the Independent on Sunday. At number 11, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats Simon Hughes was the highest placed MP to make the annual Pink List, whilst Nick Herbert, Angela Eagle and Lord Mandelson also feature.

Shadow treasury minister Angela Eagle has demanded immediate action to remove "offensive" suggestions for public spending cuts which she claimed were on a Treasury website set up to consult the public over cuts.

Economic gloom as manufacturing falls

Manufacturing production has fallen for the first time in two years, according to new figures. The Markit/CIPS PM Index showed output fell for the first time since June 2009, with orders down for the first time since July 2009. Hopes of recovery were also dampened by a four-month low for mortgage approvals. Just one in 10 British people believe the economy is in good shape, according to an Ipsos Mori poll.

Nearly 65,000 Britons are receiving winter fuel allowances despite living abroad, prompting calls from the TaxPayers' Alliance to end payments for ex-pats.
