Phi100: Labour should follow through with the kill
Two thirds of the Phi100, including a majority of those on the left, feel it is in Labour's best interests to oust the Prime Minister
James Purnell was right - It would now be in the best interests of the Labour party to force out Gordon Brown and replace him as leader.
That's the decisive verdict of the Phi100, Britain's most authoritative survey of inside and expert political opinion.
The panel is comprised of parliamentarians (including government ministers and senior opposition frontbenchers) as well as leading media commentators and political editors. Also represented are political strategists, academics and think tank leaders.
Two thirds of these insiders now feel that the time is right to force Brown out of office.
That includes a fifty five per cent majority of left leaning panellists.
Among Lib Dem and right leaning panellists the proportion is much higher.
The only group on the panel who go against the majority view are the non-aligned. They reckon a coup would not be in the party's best interests by a margin of fifty five to forty five.
The result of the survey, which was conducted yesterday before Purnell made his shock announcement, is an indication of how the tide appears to have turned against Brown both within the media and in parliament, as well as in the wider political community.
As the Cabinet appears to rally in support of the Prime Minister, the verdict of the panel is that it would be better to finish him off.
