Public back bankers’ bonuses tax

64% believe the tax is a good idea, but less enthusiastic support for a transactions tax

The British public strongly support the one-off tax on bankers’ bonuses, announced in Alistair Darling’s pre-Budget report yesterday.

The levy will tax banks (rather than bankers), including those who did not receive taxpayer money, at a rate of 50% on the total amount of money they pay on bonuses over £25,000.

A nationwide PoliticsHome poll of over 1000 people has discovered that 64% believe the tax is a good idea.

Majorities of Labour, Lib Dem and non-aligned voters supported the measure, but only 44% of Conservative voters did.

Transactions tax

There was a fair level of support for a potential transactions tax on all City trading. A ‘Tobin Tax’ is believed to be on the agenda for the meeting by Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy today. The two leaders jointly wrote an article for today’s Wall Street Journal, where they called for a “long-term global compact” between banks and society.

A transaction tax was backed by 46%, with 37% believing it to be a bad idea.

Labour and Liberal Democrats supported the idea, Conservatives were strongly against, and non-aligned voters were split.

PoliticsHome interviewed 1015 voters by email between 9-10 December 2009.  Results are weighted by party ID to reflect the UK at large.

Grumpy Old Man

All this poll proves is that Labours legacy is mainstreaming the politics of envy, and that the scapegaoting of the banks by the most inept government in british history has been bought by the more gullible lock, stock and depression.

 More smoke and mirrors from nulabour.

 The tax was so heavily leaked that many banks have paid early.

 It only applies to discetionary bonusses and not contractual ones therefore banks will defer them until next year.

 Nice headline but nulabour lies as usual
