Cameron: Egypt transition must start now

David Cameron has called for an "orderly transition" in Egypt to "answer the aspirations of the Egyptian people with political reform, not with repression". Speaking at a conference in Brussels, the Prime Minister said the transition process "must start now".

Members of the European Council have jointly condemned violence in Egypt and emphasised the right of citizens "to demonstrate freely and peacefully, under due protection from law enforcement authorities".

Mr Cameron earlier warned the Egyptian government that it will "lose any remaining credibility and support" from Britain were there to be any state-sponsored violence in Cairo today. The Prime Minister urged European leaders to "show they stand ready to help and support [an] orderly transition" in the country.

Pro-democracy demonstrations continue in Egypt, on what protesters have dubbed "the Day of Departure". President Hosni Mubarak last night said he is "fed up" with power and would like to resign immediately, but fears the country would descend into anarachy if he did so. Mr Mubarak gave his first interview since the recent nationwide protests to ABC news.

The White House has made it clear that it wants Mr Mubarak to step down now and hand over power to a three-man council.

Long time, Paul W. Hope, well! Cameron is generous. Egypt, the government, if the case, lost further credibility when it sent out the, ultimate, bogeymen (the prisoners) onto the streets of Egypt (would keep me off the streets, but I'm only mild, what a ploy). How low can you get, if the case.

By the way, that was no disrespect to all prisoners, but you get the gist.
