President Obama and David Cameron agreed to co-operate in taking multilateral action on Libya, in a phone call between the heads of state tonight.
William Hague earlier said the Government is now "very much on top of" the Libyan evacuation effort, but apologised for yesterday's delayed response. HMS Cumberland left Benghazi with 200 passengers on board this afternoon. A charter flight carrying evacuated British nationals has also left Malta bound for the UK.
Colonel Gaddafi has described the protesters who have died fighting his regime as "Libya's children" and said that those continuing the revolt are trying to "sabotage" the country's achievements.
He went on to compare himself with Queen Elizabeth II and suggested that he had no power over the military: "There are people who have been in power longer than me like Queen Elizabeth of Britain, and nothing's happened to her… Even when people come to me and say, 'Well the military might, you know, act in a different way'; I keep telling them it's not my problem. I've got no orders, no say in what the people do... the power is in their hands, it's not my problem."
Douglas Alexander earlier claimed problems with the evacuation effort of British nationals in Libya posed “serious questions of ministerial judgement” as the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary apologised for delays.
The Shadow Foreign Secretary said: “There are very serious questions of ministerial judgement, as well as the obvious technical issues which meant that the aircraft they had chartered sat on the runway at Gatwick for 10 hours yesterday afternoon."
David Cameron said he was “incredibly sorry” for any delays and condemned Gaddafi’s regime, saying: “The behaviour of this dictator cannot be allowed to stand... Britain has been in the forefront of saying that."
William Hague said: "I'm very sorry for those people who couldn't get out yesterday. Three planes were meant to go yesterday morning and for a variety of reasons, which I found infuriating but nevertheless we have to deal with, none of those planes were able or willing to take off."

The Prime Ministers trip to the Middle East has been planned for months whilst hte turmoil in these countries has caught everyone by surprise. The British companies which you refer to as 'arms dealers' have people travelling to, and working in these places all the time, and without this business our economy would be even more screwed up than ever.
Red Rag
"Quite how the Foreign Office allowed our Prime Minister to tour the Middle East at this juncture with a cadre of British arms dealers in tow, is anyone’s guess"....Even the ultra loyal Tory rag The Daily Mail cannot believe that Cameron has been whoring himself on behalf of the arms dealers, some of who are Tory donors. Whilst at the same time making a complete mess of the evacuation of British nationals from Libya...as I said....we now know who Dave prioritises the most.
Anna
Typical loony lefty remark! get your facts right.
Red Rag
The Daily Mail is loony left....err....I don't think so.

As I have said previously - it is not the Governments job to bring home British workers who work in Libya and who do not pay any tax in this country. It is the duty of the company who employs them to get them out if need be. If there is any blood letting to be had over this affair in Libya it is the Labour party who should be squirming now as they tacitly sanctioned the regimes behavior and even had a government minister advising them on how to free someone from a prison in Britains jurisdiction! The blood is on the hands of Blair, Brown, Wee Dougie, Miliband(s) and all the rest of that shameful gang who have enriched themselves at our expense in the 12 years they raped this country!
