British oil workers evacuated from Libya

David Cameron has given his clearest statement yet that the Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi should step down immediately.  Speaking from Downing Street, Mr Cameron said: "It is time for Colonel Gaddafi to go and to go now, there is no future for Libya that includes him" and he said the British Government was "putting serious pressure" on the regime to relinquish power by imposing a travel ban and an asset freeze.

The Prime Minister also confirmed that a number of Britons had been rescued on Sunday and although there had been some risks, he decided it was the "right thing to do" to ensure British nationals in remote oil fields were evacuated from the country safely.

On Sunday evening the Foreign Office confirmed that the Chancellor George Osborne had taken the decision to freeze the assets of the Gaddafi family before the markets open on Monday.  This follows the UN Security Council Resolution tabled by France and Britain, backing sanctions on Libya is response to state violence against protesters.

George Osborne said the assets had been frozen "so that they cannot be used against the interests of the Libyan people" and he added:  "Together with the action taken by William Hague and Vince Cable, this is a strong message for the Libyan regime that violence against its own people is not acceptable."

However, Saif Gaddafi reiterated that his family will not leave Libya, telling ABC News: "Nobody is leaving this country. We live here, we die here. This is our country, the Libyans are our people".  Colonel Gaddafi's son also said media reports of what was happening in the North African country were inaccurate and security forces had not used violence against protesters, saying: "There is a big gap between reality and the media reports”.  Saif also claimed the majority of Libyans still supported his father.

How sanctions stop the killing; how will words stop the killing. Does these western leaders think we are naive, we see they are doing nothing but evacuating their nations, however never it is rosy they will be the first to set up shop. We have long memories, we will remember that when times were tough who ran and who stood by us and shoot. Why is it that all these dictators have stolen monies hidden in western bank/countries, what does aiding and abetting meaning.
