OECD chief backs Osborne

OECD chief backs Osborne
The head of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) yesterday hit back at claims that it is withdrawing its support for George Osborne’s economic policy. Angel Gurria told Sky News he “absolutely” supported the UK’s approach to fiscal consolidation, saying: “We think it's the way to go. We have said that you should stay the course and continue to support this route. It is the way - you see - to provide confidence. The markets have already cleared the confidence tests - some people said, 'Oh, maybe they even overshot a little bit'. Well this is what you do with markets… you have to show that you have the conviction and that you're going to stick with it."

The OECD’s support had been called into question after its deputy secretary-general Pier Carlo Padoan said the UK should cut spending more slowly if the current slow rate of growth persists, stating: "We see merit in slowing the pace of fiscal consolidation if there is not so good news on the growth front."

Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls seized on the comments, saying it was "now time George Osborne listened to wise advice, looked at what is happening to the economy and thought again about the speed and scale of his cuts”.

Of course they are right behind Boy George. "We see merit in slowing the pace of fiscal consolidation if there is not so good news on the growth front." That really is a message of support !! Ooh look another flying pig !!
